The University of Richmond, a top-ranked, small, private, liberal arts university, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director and Medical Director of the Student Health Center. The Director and Medical Director will join a newly expanded Student Development Leadership Team and play a key role in enhancing the visibility, integration, and impact of student health services across the University. Accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), the Student Health Center (SHC) serves a diverse student population of approximately 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students and is housed in a beautiful, state-of-the-art Well-Being Center. This centralized hub for health services—including medical care, counseling, health promotion, and recreation—fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and enhances the student experience. The Director/Medical Director role offers a unique blend of direct clinical care and a robust leadership and administrative portfolio, contributing both to day-to-day student health and long-term strategic planning. While the clinic is closed to students during the summer, the Medical Director and most professional staff are 12-month employees, ensuring year-round continuity, leadership, and proactive care planning.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director/Medical Director assumes overall responsibility for the operations of the University of Richmond Student Health Center (SHC) by providing student-focused leadership and support for a medical team skilled in caring for the young adult population. The SHC provides health care, counseling, and health education to University of Richmond students; advises on the University’s response to emergency situations impacting public health; and works closely with other Health & Well-being departments as an integrated team to provide a seamless wellness experience for students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Administrative
Responsible for all aspects of operations of the SHC to maintain the daily efficient operation of services.
Directs the development and implementation of short and long-range strategic plans for the Student Health Center, which are consistent with its mission and vision, and the mission and strategic priorities of the Health and Well-being Unit and the University of Richmond.
Oversees the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and medical services that comply and are consistent with accepted medical standards, applicable regulatory and licensing requirements, federal and state regulations, AAAHC accreditation standards, and the policies of UR.
Develops and supports processes that encourage integrated care efforts and reduce barriers to care across health and well-being programs at the University.
Serves on the leadership team for the Health and Well-being Unit and represents SHC on University committees and projects.
Responsible for the supervision, recruitment, and evaluation of operations and clinical student health staff; determines and upholds an organizational structure to support quality care and optimal functioning.
Develops and maintains intentional collaborative relationships with colleagues in the community, local public health officials, and professional associations pertaining to collegiate health service provision.
Maintains confidentiality of health records and actively supports patient rights and serves as a patient advocate.
Ensures that SHC staff have appropriate credentials and certifications for the duties they perform, continuing education requirements are met to maintain such certification/licensure, and that in-service learning opportunities are provided to the staff on a regular basis.
Clinical
Provides direct primary care for students, appropriate to the needs of a diverse student population, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral for consultation or specialty services, mental health and preventive health screenings, and follow-up care, while ensuring completion of patient records.
Serves as lead physician and primary point of contact for parents, faculty, staff, hospitals, and outside providers, including ongoing assessment and updates to Student Health Center protocols.
Provides consultation and supervision to physicians, nurse practitioners registered nurses and medical assistants on challenging, complex or high-risk patient issues.
In collaboration with the Director of Emergency Management, leads medical-related response to individuals and/or groups during campus-wide crises and natural disasters.
Ensures that his/her own clinical skills and medical knowledge are maintained at an appropriate level that meets accepted medical standards.
Supports and promotes awareness and understanding of the importance of belonging and inclusion as it relates to all people in Health & Well-being facilities, programs, and communications. Performs all duties under a commitment to work effectively with all students, faculty, and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education (Required)
Graduated from 4-year undergraduate college/university.
Graduated from an accredited School of Medicine.
Completion of residency training program in a primary care specialty.
Board certification in a primary care specialty
Current unrestricted Virginia Board of Medicine physician license or ability to obtain prior to start date.
BLS certification required within 30 days of hire
DEA certification required at the time of hire
Experience
7+ years of recent, relevant and progressive clinical experience in an out-patient setting beyond post graduate training (hospital, clinic, college, or private practice) providing evidence-based, quality healthcare.
5+ years of experience providing direct supervision of clinical and administrative staff or comparable experience, including 2+ years in a management or leadership role
Experience with regular use of electronic medical record systems (as super user or clinical lead)
Experience with healthcare accreditation standards, quality improvement and professional peer review
Experience working with student learners in a formal educational setting
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at University of Richmond
